The relatives are all gone. Kids are back in school. The tree is taken down… well, not yet, if you’re in my family (soon, honey, I promise). It’s time to look ahead to the kids and family films that will be hitting movie theaters in the next couple months.
It’ll be a challenge for 2020 to live up to 2019’s record breaking films. Last year, 9 films grossed $333M or more in the US. Not that long ago, 2014 to be precise, not a single movie hit that mark.
But with more superheros, sequels, prequels, superhero sequels and superhero prequels, and remakes (looking at you Mulan), 2020 will have a movie for everyone.
As in the past, we’re only showing kids and family films. Obviously that’s highly subjective, so what one family thinks is inappropriate may not be to others. Hey, if your 11 year old is into “Gretel & Hansel”, the PG-13 horror take on the Grimm fairy tale, that’s cool.
But for our purposes, we stay away from that, as well as “Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn”, an R-rated film. I’m sure there will be plenty of kids who want to see that, but just know going in that the movie will have a much harder edge to it. Maybe not quite Deadpool, but definitely along the lines of “Joker”.
Release dates may change, so check back often.
